Understanding Your Options

When people come into my office to discuss child custody issues related to their divorce, they often tell me that they want sole legal custody. What they generally mean is that they would like primary residential custody. In other words, they want their home to be the primary residence of their children. Because the input of both parents (except in cases where a parent’s mental health or substance abuse makes it impossible) is important for children, generally joint legal custody is given. This allows both parents input in matters concerning religion, health care and education. However, there will only be one residence for residency and school attendance.

I Use the Same Methods the Courts Use to Examine Custody Issues

Trying to juggle busy schedules in order to determine which residence is best for children can be tiring. I utilize a software program used by the courts to clarify parents’ and children’s schedules and see exactly how much time a parent has per week to devote to children.
