Helpful advice for parenting after a stressful divorce

On Behalf of | Feb 5, 2021 | Child Custody

Happily ever after is the goal when most couples tie the knot. However, that goal sometimes becomes unattainable as the years go by. In the real world, things just don’t work out as planned and ending the marriage becomes the best course of action. Parents who divorce often have a number of concerns, from child custody to living arrangements. The following advice may be helpful for parents in Kansas who are going through or have been through a divorce.

Never put children in the middle

Resentment is a by-product of many divorces. But no matter how much conflict or resentment there is among ex-spouses, never put the children in the middle of it or make them choose sides. Avoid talking about the other parent in a negative light altogether. By doing this, the children will be able to have healthy relationships with both parents, which will benefit all parties in the long run.

Managing the transition between homes

Joint custody or shared parenting arrangements are common these days. This means the children will be transitioning between parents intermittently. It is not uncommon for some children to have trouble adjusting to the transition and they often show this in the form of tantrums or outbursts. Although it may be difficult to do, try to be empathetic and understand that the children are being impacted by something they didn’t want and had no control over. Never put up with behavior that crosses the line, but it can be helpful to talk to the children and acknowledge their feelings.

Unfortunately, the children are sometimes the most impacted by a divorce or separation. Kansas parents who have questions about child custody or custody arrangements may want to consider discussions with a knowledgeable attorney. A legal representative experienced in family law can provide guidance and help any parent gain an understanding of the laws surrounding child custody.
