Challenges that women face in a gray divorce

These days, there are more older spouses in Kansas separating than ever before. According to recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 35% of all couples who divorced last year in the United States were aged 55 or older. Divorce is a tough event for any person to go through. However, a gray divorce can be especially challenging for women.

Financial difficulties

A gray divorce is often not something older adults can quickly recover from. Economically, there’s less time to recoup financial losses. In many marriages, husbands are stereotypically the primary breadwinners. When divorce happens later in life, women may find themselves struggling just to make ends meet. While Social Security can provide at least some income, it is usually not enough to ward off poverty.

Where to go for help

When individuals go through a divorce, they are often required to make the most important financial decisions of their lives at a very emotional time. Women who go through a gray divorce would be best served to not make any big financial decisions on their own for at least the first year. Amid a gray divorce, it can be helpful to consider hiring a financial advisor to help sort through all the assets and any future financial risks.

There are complex issues to solve in any marital breakup. During such an emotional event, hiring a knowledgeable legal professional is one of the most beneficial things any person in Kansas can do. An experienced family law attorney can provide much-needed legal guidance while helping clients to achieve the best possible outcome.
